This is a directory to find chess tutors in Calgary for paid lessons for those interested. We noticed a need for this, and decided to create a place to find all available instructors in the region. The Checkmate Foundation does not affiliate with any of these instructors.
Angelo Tolentino - Flying Minds YYC and Calgary Junior Chess Club
The instructor is a highly experienced chess coach with over a decade of teaching in Calgary, a former varsity player at De La Salle University, and a co-founder of the Chess in the Library program. He is a Canadian National Expert (CFC rating: 2032), a FIDE National Arbiter, and an Arena FIDE Master.

Vlad Rekhson - Calgary Junior Chess Club
Vlad Rekhson is a National Master, International Chess Arbiter, and experienced coach who teaches at The Renert and Edison schools in Calgary. With a background in private and group instruction, he tailors lessons to each student’s skill level and learning style. He has officiated major tournaments, including two Canadian Opens and the European Club Championship.

Patrick Tolentino - Flying Minds YYC and Calgary Junior Chess Club
Patrick is a National Master with a CFC rating of 2238 and a former member of Team Alberta, achieving 3rd place at the Canadian Chess Challenge. He coached at the CJCC Sunday Chess School (2017–2019) and works with students from beginners to aspiring club players. His coaching emphasizes deep understanding, personalized game review, and clear, simplified explanations to help students grasp complex ideas.

Alex Yam - Calgary Junior Chess Club
Yam is a FIDE Master and the 2014 Alberta Chess Champion with a CFC rating close to 2400. With over 10 years of coaching experience, he is highly result-driven and has helped many students surpass their goals—some improving by 1000 rating points in just a few years.

Andre Tolentino - Flying Minds YYC and Calgary Junior Chess Club
Andre is a passionate chess coach and multi-time Alberta Chess Champion, having won titles in 2011, 2014, 2017, and 2019. He placed 3rd at the 2017 Canadian Chess Challenge and served as the 2019 flag bearer for Team Alberta. With extensive experience teaching at the Calgary Junior Chess Centre, he works with youth to develop strong chess fundamentals.

Khino Tolentino - Flying Minds YYC and Calgary Junior Chess Club
Khino is an experienced youth chess coach who began playing at age 5. He was the 2013 Alberta Chess Champion for his grade and earned 3rd place at the Canadian Chess Challenge that same year in Ottawa.

Roy Yearwood
Roy Yearwood is a long-time chess coach and mentor based in Calgary, known for his dedication to youth chess development. He has been actively involved with the Calgary Junior Chess Centre and has coached numerous students across all levels, from beginners to advanced competitive players. Roy is recognized for his patient teaching style and commitment to growing the chess community in Alberta.
